Do you think you could build a car powered by nothing but air? A balloon-powered car is pushed forward by air escaping from a balloon, and it is fun and easy to build with materials you already have around your house. Can you imagine how you would want your own balloon-powered car to look? Can you design a car that will travel as far as possible? You can even measure your car's speed using your smartphone and a special sensor app. Get ready to grab some simple supplies to bring your idea to life!

This science project aims to demonstrate the principles of Newton’s Third Law of Motion and energy conversion through the construction of a balloon-powered car. The car is made using simple and lightweight materials, including a plastic bottle or cardboard chassis, bottle-cap wheels, wooden skewers, drinking straws, and a balloon. The car moves forward when air stored inside the inflated balloon escapes through a straw, producing a force that propels the vehicle in the opposite direction. This experiment illustrates how potential energy stored in the stretched balloon is converted into kinetic energy, resulting in motion. The project also investigates how different factors, such as balloon size, wheel alignment, nozzle size, and vehicle weight, may affect the speed and distance travelled by the car. By conducting repeated trials and recording measurements, the relationship between these variables and the car’s performance can be studied. This project provides a simple, practical, and engaging way to understand fundamental physics concepts while developing scientific observation, experimentation, and problem-solving skills.
