Household food waste remains a significant yet largely preventable issue, primarily attributed to inadequate tracking of stored food, limited user awareness, and the absence of structured reminder mechanisms. This study presents the development of an Intelligent Household Food Waste Reduction System aimed at enhancing food management practices within domestic environments. The study is guided by the hypothesis that a structured system integrating food identification, user input, and timely reminder functions can effectively reduce the incidence of forgotten and expired food items.
The methodology involves the design and prototyping of a user-oriented system that enables the registration of food items through visual recognition as well as manual categorization, coupled with the recording of relevant attributes such as food type and estimated expiry duration. The system subsequently delivers automated notifications to prompt timely consumption. Evaluation of the system was conducted through observational analysis of user interaction and system functionality in real-life usage scenarios.
Findings indicate that the implementation of the system contributes to improved user awareness, more organized food handling practices, and a noticeable reduction in avoidable food waste. In conclusion, the proposed system demonstrates strong practical relevance as a scalable solution to address household food waste, supporting cost efficiency and promoting more responsible consumption behaviours in alignment with sustainability objectives.
