Cough and throat discomfort are common health issues often treated with synthetic lozenges containing artificial flavorings and preservatives, which may cause side effects with prolonged use. This study explores the potential of Pucuk Mata Itik (Ardisia elliptica), a local medicinal plant traditionally known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, as a natural alternative for herbal lozenges. In this study, the leaves of Pucuk Mata Itik were extracted using maceration of cold-water method. The extract obtained was incorporated into lozenge formulations using sugar, honey and natural stabilizers as a base. Cold water extracts of Pucuk Mata Itik showed significant bacterial inhibition zone against Streptococcus sp. and Salmonella sp. with 2.4 ± 0.2 and 1.2 ± 0.1 cm respectively. The significant antibacterial effects of Pucuk Mata Itik highlights the potential of this plant extract as ingredients for development of antibacterial lozenges for herbal-based health products from local source remedies.
