Abstract
Road safety around school zones remains a significant concern, particularly when students cross roads during peak arrival and dismissal hours. Conventional pedestrian crossings often rely on static road markings and warning signs, which may not provide sufficient active warnings to approaching motorists, especially in low-light conditions. To address this issue, iSafePath 2.0 was developed as a smart safety crosswalk system designed to improve pedestrian visibility and enhance awareness of potential hazards near school crossings.
The prototype integrates a HuskyLens AI Vision Sensor to detect pedestrians, an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor to detect approaching vehicles, and a microcontroller-based control system to coordinate warning signals. An LCD 1602 I2C display communicates crossing instructions, while LEDs and a buzzer provide visual and audible alerts. Solar-powered operation is incorporated into the design concept to support energy sustainability. In addition, LED lighting along the zebra crossing is intended to improve its visibility in low-light conditions.
The system is designed to provide timely warnings based on pedestrian detection and vehicle proximity, supporting safer decision-making at school crossings. A miniature prototype was constructed to demonstrate the system's components, layout and operational concept. Further testing is required to evaluate detection accuracy, response time, warning effectiveness and reliability under different environmental conditions.
iSafePath 2.0 offers a practical, technology-driven approach to school-zone pedestrian safety. By combining AI-based vision, ultrasonic sensing and multimodal alerts, the innovation has the potential to support safer school environments and contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
