Musk lime (Citrus microcarpa), locally known as limau kasturi, is a common citrus fruit in Malaysia that contains beneficial compounds with potential antioxidant properties. However, its peel is often discarded as waste despite its potential value as a natural ingredient in skincare products. This innovation project aims to utilise discarded musk lime peels to formulate a serum and evaluate its basic physicochemical and antioxidant properties. The project promotes the conversion of fruit waste into a value-added skincare product while supporting sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

The musk lime peels were processed and extracted using ethanol as a solvent to obtain the extract for serum formulation. The extraction process involved drying and stirring to facilitate the preparation of the extract. The formulated serum was then evaluated through organoleptic assessment, pH measurement, viscosity testing, and antioxidant activity analysis. These evaluations were conducted to determine the product’s physical characteristics and preliminary suitability for skincare applications.

The results showed that the formulated serum had a pinkish-red colour and a liquid texture. The measured pH was 5.11, while the viscosity was 1,000 cP. The antioxidant activity test produced a reported value of 490.209 ppm. These findings provide preliminary information about the characteristics of the formulated product and indicate the potential of musk lime peel extract as an ingredient in a value-added skincare formulation. However, further testing is required to establish its antioxidant effectiveness, stability, safety, and suitability for topical application.

In conclusion, this innovation demonstrates a practical approach to utilising discarded musk lime peels in the development of a skincare serum. The project has the potential to reduce fruit waste, encourage the use of natural ingredients, and create opportunities for sustainable product development. Further improvements and comprehensive evaluations could support the future development of musk lime peel extract as a promising ingredient in cosmetic formulations.
