ABSTRACT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is increasingly integrated into everyday life, yet existing educational kits often require technical knowledge and provide limited exposure to real-world sensor behaviour. This project aims to develop a portable and gamified IoT learning kit that enables beginners without programming or engineering experience to explore sensing and automation through interactive activities. The system uses an ESP32 microcontroller configured as a local Wi-Fi access point, integrating a WebSocket server, browser-based interface, multiple sensors, and interactive output devices. Three gamified modules and a guided learning pathway, Learn With Me, were developed to support experiential learning and introduce practical challenges such as sensor noise, measurement variations, and false alarms. Eight instrumented bench tests were conducted to evaluate system functionality and optimise hardware performance. Key improvements included eliminating button contact bounce, establishing a suitable ultrasonic operating distance, improving camera-based motion detection consistency, and increasing power supply stability under load. Three tests resulted in design modifications, demonstrating an iterative, measurement-driven development process. The completed prototype successfully achieved its three development objectives. The project demonstrates the technical feasibility of an accessible, gamified IoT learning platform that exposes beginners to realistic sensing and automation challenges. Further evaluation involving actual learners is recommended to establish its educational effectiveness.
