Conventional battery waste contains hazardous and toxic substances, such as lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), which can potentially contaminate the environment and pose health risks if improperly managed. This study aimed to develop Bio-Ecocell, an environmentally friendly alternative battery using citrus-peel-based eco-enzyme as an electrolyte, and to evaluate its electrical performance. A laboratory experimental method with a quantitative approach was employed. The eco-enzyme was produced by fermenting citrus peel waste, sugar, and water at a mass ratio of 3:1:10 for 90 days, followed by filtration and pH measurement. The resulting eco-enzyme was then used as an electrolyte in a voltaic cell using iron (Fe) as the anode and copper (Cu) as the cathode. Series and parallel cell configurations were tested to optimize the electrical output. The battery performance was evaluated by measuring open-circuit voltage and electric current using a digital multimeter, followed by a practical test using a wall clock to determine its ability to supply electrical energy. The results showed that increasing the volume of eco-enzyme increased the generated voltage. A configuration of three electrochemical cells produced a voltage of 3.8 V, which was comparable to the nominal voltage of approximately 3.7 V for a single lithium-ion battery cell. The Bio-Ecocell was also successfully used to operate a wall clock. These findings demonstrate that citrus-peel-based eco-enzyme has potential as an electrolyte for developing environmentally friendly alternative batteries while promoting the utilization of organic waste. Further research should optimize the electrolyte volume, number and size of electrodes, electric current, and discharge duration to improve Bio-Ecocell performance.
