A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s surface where magma, ash and gases escape. When magma reaches the surface, it is called lava.

There are three main types of volcanoes: active, dormant and extinct. Active volcanoes erupt regularly, dormant volcanoes may erupt again, while extinct volcanoes are not expected to erupt again. Famous volcanoes include Mount Fuji in Japan and Mount Vesuvius in Italy. Volcanoes can also create new land and make soil fertile.

For our experiment, we use baking soda, vinegar, dish soap and red food colouring. When vinegar is added to baking soda, a chemical reaction produces carbon dioxide gas. The gas creates pressure and pushes the foamy liquid out of the bottle, making it look like lava.

Now, we will demonstrate our experiment.

(Pour the vinegar into the bottle.)

As we can see, the red foam flows down the volcano. This model helps us understand how pressure can force materials out of a volcano.

Although this is not real lava, it demonstrates the basic idea of a volcanic eruption.
