The innovation project “Fertilizer from Pencil Shavings” aims to explore the potential of pencil shavings as a raw material for producing fertilizer for school plants while promoting waste management practices and environmental awareness.
This initiative, implemented under the Rakan Bumi Programme (ProRABU) towards becoming an Eco School, involves the entire SK Lok Yuk Inanam community. Pupils collect pencil shavings in designated containers provided in each classroom. Once filled, the collected materials are handed over to the coordinating teacher for centralized collection.
Subsequently, the coordinating teacher, pupil committee members, and school community collaborate in processing the collected materials. The materials undergo decomposition until sufficiently mature before being applied to plants around the school. Plant growth and health will be monitored to evaluate the suitability of the materials as fertilizer.
The uniqueness of this project lies in transforming everyday classroom waste into a potential environmentally friendly resource through active pupil participation. The project is expected to promote experiential learning, teamwork, environmental responsibility, and sustainable school practices. The fertilizer's effectiveness will require further systematic observation and evaluation.
