Drunk driving remains a serious road safety problem that can cause accidents, injuries, fatalities and property damage. In Malaysia, 26 fatal accidents caused by alcohol-impaired driving were reported between 2023 and June 2026, highlighting the need for preventive measures. This study addressed the question of whether an integrated system combining alcohol detection, steering-wheel grip detection, vehicle prevention and remote notification can help prevent unsafe vehicle operation. It was hypothesized that the proposed system could detect alcohol-related driving risks and automatically prevent vehicle operation when alcohol was detected with steering-wheel grip. An experimental and development-based research design was used. The prototype incorporated an MQ-3 alcohol sensor, FSR 402 grip pressure sensor, NodeMCU, GPS module, LED indicators, buzzer and BotFather API. Functional testing was conducted under four conditions with five trials each, giving 20 trials. The overall success rate was 85%, with 100% success for both no-alcohol conditions, 80% for alcohol with no grip and 60% for alcohol with grip. A survey of 52 respondents showed 100% agreement that the system was useful and beneficial for promoting safer driving, while 7 experts agreed that it was useful and relevant to current road safety situations. The findings indicate that the prototype demonstrated its intended safety functions under controlled conditions, although the alcohol-with-grip condition requires further improvement. The project supports SDG 3, SDG 9, SDG 11 and SDG 16.
