This study focused on HUSKAY, a biodegradable cardboard developed from
sayote (Sechium edule) peels and corn (Zea mays) husks, as an environmentally
friendly alternative to conventional tree-based cardboard. The study aimed to
produce HUSKAY, assess its biodegradability, strength, and water resistance, and
compare its properties with those of commercial cardboard. Surveys and
laboratory tests were conducted after the agricultural wastes were dried,
processed into pulp, and formed into sheets. The results showed that although
HUSKAY decomposes faster than synthetic packaging materials, it remains strong
enough for lightweight packaging applications. Overall, HUSKAY is an affordable
and sustainable material that promotes environmental awareness, helps reduce
waste sent to landfills, and minimizes the need for cutting down trees.
