Bi-Carb Ultra Clean Paste is an enhanced, acid-free cleaning innovation developed to reduce visible weld-burn and heat-tint marks on industrial stainless-steel surfaces. Conventional acid-pickling methods can involve highly corrosive chemicals, strict handling procedures, personal protective equipment and controlled waste management. This project therefore explores a practical, lower-hazard and ready-to-use alternative. The formulation combines sodium bicarbonate, fine powdered charcoal, sodium gluconate and water. Sodium bicarbonate provides mild alkaline cleaning and gentle mechanical action; charcoal assists with scrubbing and residue removal; and sodium gluconate functions as a water-soluble sequestrant that helps bind loosened metal ions and reduce redeposition during rinsing. The paste is packaged in a convenient squeeze tube and can be applied manually or with a powered scrubber. Controlled visual testing under equal paste quantities, scrubbing, and rinsing conditions showed approximately 80% preliminary visual weld-burn reduction for the Ultra formulation, compared with approximately 65% for the earlier Bi-Carb Clean Paste. The mixed paste recorded an in-house pH of approximately 10. Laboratory analysis of 4,000 mL of cleaning run-off water recorded a pH of 8.38, with all listed parameters within their corresponding Standard B limits. Industry feedback from 30 manufacturing Production Managers, Supervisors and Engineers further showed strong acceptance, with 93% recommending continued development. BI-CARB Ultra Clean Paste demonstrates promising potential for further optimisation and industrial-scale validation.
