This study focuses on the design, development, and evaluation of
Wavelight, an innovative automatic desk lamp created to address
the need for precise and convenient localized illumination in study
and work environments. The primary objective of this project is to
construct a smart lighting device that automatically directs its beam
toward the user's intended location through non-contact gesture
control, providing a superior and seamless user experience
compared to traditional manual desk lamps.
The product was developed by integrating four fundamental
technology domains, namely electrical, electronic, mechanical, and
programming systems. High-quality wood was chosen as the
primary structural material due to its durability, natural aesthetic
appeal, and capability to safely enclose internal circuitry. The core
mechanism utilizes an Arduino Uno microcontroller connected to a
gesture sensor and a high-torque servo motor (Servo Mega) to
execute smooth directional movements based on detected hand
signals.
Based on testing and performance evaluations, Wavelight
successfully achieves its core function by accurately responding to
hand gestures and providing targeted illumination. Furthermore, the
design exhibits strong ergonomic and aesthetic qualities, featuring
an easily accessible main power switch, balanced structure, and eco
friendly attributes that make it both visually appealing and safe for
everyday use.
Despite its success, testing revealed several operational constraints
and limitations. The overall weight of the wooden frame limits
portability, making it slightly cumbersome to carry around
frequently. Additionally, the gesture sensor is susceptible to
environmental signal interference, the internal wiring layout
remains somewhat cluttered, and the servo motor linkage carries a
risk of detaching if the unit experiences physical impact.
In conclusion, Wavelight effectively achieves its main objective as a
smart lighting solution using integrated electronic and mechanical
components. To improve future iterations, it is recommended to
reduce overall dimensions using lighter alternative materials,
securely embed the servo motor directly within the wooden housing,
and implement refined cable management alongside sensor
calibration to minimize interference and ensure maximum stability.
