Unpleasant odours from shoes, classrooms, and indoor spaces are common, especially after pupils participate in physical activities. To solve this problem, 3 pupils from Year 5 pupils of SJKT Tun Sambanthan developed Charcocoshell, a natural, eco-friendly, and chemical-free air freshener. Charcocoshell is made from three simple natural ingredients: burnt coconut shell charcoal powder, dried kaffir lime leaves, and dried lemongrass. Coconut shell charcoal has many tiny pores that help absorb unpleasant odours. Meanwhile, kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass release a fresh herbal fragrance, creating a cleaner and more comfortable environment. All ingredients are dried, ground into powder, and mixed together to produce a low-cost and sustainable air freshener. This innovation also encourages environmental sustainability by reusing discarded coconut shells instead of throwing them away. It shows how agricultural waste can be transformed into a useful product while reducing environmental pollution. The ingredients are inexpensive, easy to obtain, and can be grown in home gardens, making the product suitable for everyday use. Charcocoshell was tested in classrooms and personal spaces such as shoe racks and bags to observe its ability to reduce unpleasant smells. The results showed that the product effectively absorbed bad odours and left a pleasant herbal scent without using harmful chemicals. This created a fresher and more comfortable environment for pupils and teachers. The project also promotes STEM learning by encouraging pupils to apply scientific knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving skills to develop practical solutions for everyday challenges. Through this innovation, pupils learned the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable product development. In conclusion, Charcocoshell is an affordable, safe, and environmentally friendly innovation that effectively reduces unpleasant odours. Future improvements include producing the powder in a solid air freshener form with more attractive packaging and a longer-lasting fragrance, making it more practical for wider community use.
