Abstract
The increasing use of synthetic insecticides has raised concerns over environmental pollution, human health risks, and pesticide resistance. To address these challenges, D-Lemon Insect Repellent Spray was developed as an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative using natural plant-based materials. The main ingredient is the peel of Citrus medica (citron), which is widely available, particularly in Sarawak. Citrus peel contains D-limonene, a naturally occurring bioactive compound with proven insect-repellent properties, making it highly effective against common household pests such as ants and cockroaches. Laboratory analysis conducted by the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre using Solid-Phase Microextraction Gas hromatography–Mass Spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS) confirmed that the citrus peel contains 89.76% D-limonene, validating its potential as an effective natural insect repellent. The production process involves cleaning and peeling fresh Citrus medica fruits, drying the peels, and extracting the essential oil before formulating it into a ready-to-use spray. The formulation is free from synthetic pesticides and hazardous chemicals, making it safer for humans, pets, and the environment while providing an effective solution for household pest control. D-Lemon Insect Repellent Spray represents an innovative, sustainable, and commercially viable solution for natural pest management while promoting environmental conservation, waste valorisation, and the development of eco-friendly consumer products.
