Food waste and food safety remain significant concerns, particularly when consumers are uncertain whether food is still fresh and safe to consume. Our preliminary survey revealed that 44.6% of respondents sometimes discard food because they are unsure of its freshness. Most respondents rely on expiry dates to determine food quality, while more than half reported accidentally consuming spoiled food. To address these issues, FoodVio was developed as an innovative colour-changing indicator that provides a simple visual method for monitoring food freshness. FoodVio uses three colour stages: green indicates fresh food, yellow signals that the food should be consumed soon, and red indicates possible spoilage. By providing an easy-to-understand visual indication of freshness, FoodVio aims to help consumers make more informed decisions before consuming or discarding food. The innovation has the potential to improve food safety, reduce unnecessary food waste, and encourage more sustainable food consumption practices.
