Biogas is a renewable energy source produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic matter.
This process, carried out by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen within a sealed digester,
results in a gas primarily composed of methane (CH4) (50-70%) and carbon dioxide (CO2) (30-
40%), along with trace amounts of other gases. The solid and liquid residue left after digestion,
known as digestate or bio-slurry, is a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer. The aim of this research is to
invent biogas digester for the production of biogas (methane) from leftover food waste collected
from Dewan Makan, Kolej PERMATA Insan. The biogas produced will be collected, tested their
usage and will be promoted to people in rural area. Biogas in rural area will be applied as cooking
fuel where it can directly replace firewood, charcoal, and kerosene for cooking. This significantly
reduces indoor air pollution (a major health hazard, especially for women and children),
deforestation, and the time spent collecting fuel. Biogas also can be used as source of lighting in
specially designed lamps to provide clean, reliable lighting replacing kerosene lamps that are costly,
unsafe, and polluting. This improves living conditions and allows for activities like studying or
working after dark. Biogas utilization in rural areas presents a compelling solution to a range of
challenges, offering significant environmental, economic, and social benefits. It's particularly
relevant in regions where access to conventional energy sources is limited and organic waste (like
animal manure, agricultural residues, and food scraps) is abundant. The digestate or bio-slurry
(leftover residue after anaerobic fermentation) is an excellent organic fertilizer, rich in nitrogen,
phosphorus, and potassium. The utilization of digestate as fertilizer by rural folks will improves
soil fertility, enhances soil structure, water retention, and microbial activity, leading to increased
crop yields and reduced reliance on expensive chemical fertilizers.
