Driver fatigue and microsleep are among the leading causes of road accidents, particularly during long-distance and night-time driving. Even a brief loss of attention can result in serious injuries, fatalities, and significant economic losses. To address this growing concern, the Smart Driver Alert – Anti-Sleep Alarm System was developed as an affordable and practical solution to detect early signs of driver drowsiness and provide immediate warnings before accidents occur.
The system utilizes an IR Eye Blink Sensor and an Tilt Sensor to continuously monitor the driver's eye movement and head position in real time. These inputs are processed by an Arduino Uno microcontroller, which identifies signs of fatigue such as prolonged eye closure and abnormal head tilting. Once drowsiness is detected, an audible alarm is activated instantly to alert the driver and restore focus, helping to prevent potential accidents.
The objectives of this project are to detect driver drowsiness, provide real-time warning alerts, reduce fatigue-related road accidents, and enhance road safety awareness. To evaluate the need for such a system, a survey involving 50 respondents was conducted. The results showed that 94% of respondents agreed that a driver drowsiness detection system is necessary, while 92% believed it could help reduce road accidents, indicating strong public support for the innovation.
This project supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by promoting safer transportation through innovative technology.
In conclusion, the Smart Driver Alert – Anti-Sleep Alarm System demonstrates strong potential as a low-cost, effective, and user-friendly safety solution. By focusing on prevention through real-time monitoring and early intervention, this innovation can help save lives, reduce road accidents, and contribute to a safer and smarter transportation environment.
