Type Your AbstractThe Smart Animal Shelter & Feeder System Using AI & Micro:bit is an innovative project developed to improve the welfare, safety, and comfort of stray animals. Many stray animals lack access to sufficient food, clean water, and safe shelter, leaving them vulnerable to extreme temperatures, rain, and other environmental hazards. This project aims to address these problems by developing an automated shelter that integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI), sensors, and a Micro:bit controller.
The system uses an AI model trained with Google Teachable Machine to recognise specific animals through a camera. An ultrasonic sensor detects the presence of an animal and activates a servo motor to open the shelter door. A DHT11 temperature sensor monitors the surrounding temperature and activates a fan when the temperature exceeds the set limit. A rain sensor helps control the shelter door during rainy conditions, while a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) automatically switches on a light in low-light conditions. In addition, a water sensor monitors the water level and activates a pump when refilling is required. An automated feeder dispenses food according to a programmed schedule. The system is programmed using Microsoft MakeCode to coordinate the sensors and electronic components.
This project demonstrates how AI, automation, and STEM technologies can be applied to solve real-world animal welfare problems. It has the potential to reduce the need for constant human monitoring while providing stray animals with better access to food, water, and shelter. The project supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15: Life on Land by promoting the protection of animals and responsible care for living organisms. Future improvements may include solar power, mobile application monitoring, and food-level detection to enhance the system's efficiency and sustainability.
