This innovation project introduces an advanced effervescent tablet formulation incorporating coconut inflorescence sap (Cocos nucifera L.) extract as a potential natural antidiabetic agent. One of the primary challenges associated with fresh coconut sap is its susceptibility to rapid spontaneous fermentation, resulting in a limited shelf life and significant barriers to commercialisation. To address this limitation, spray-drying technology incorporating β-cyclodextrin as a stabilising agent was employed to convert the liquid sap into a stable powdered form.
The development of the effervescent tablet provides an efficient and convenient drug delivery system, facilitating rapid dissolution in water and potentially enhancing the bioavailability of bioactive compounds, particularly flavonoids and polyphenols. In vivo evaluation using streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic Wistar rats demonstrated that the formulation significantly reduced fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels and mitigated the substantial body weight loss associated with diabetes.
Furthermore, the optimised formulation exhibited satisfactory physicochemical properties, including tablet hardness, weight uniformity, and disintegration time, in accordance with applicable international pharmaceutical standards. This innovative product represents a promising natural therapeutic approach with the potential to improve patient compliance while enhancing the stability, usability, and commercial value of locally sourced agricultural resources.
